CLOUDLAND CANYON

TRAIL MAINTENANCE DAY
WE NEED YOU !
Men and Women alike
... and you will get a FREE t-shirt in return
Greg Foster will be facilitating a trail maintenance day at Cloudland Canyon for our group. We are hoping that we can provide a good turnout of people to help contribute. We are fortunate to be able to be a part of a group of people that have the opportunity to go hiking regularly in various places to take in the beauty of the area. We often oooh and awwwwe at some of the things we see. Now we have the opportunity to be a part of doing something to give back to the community, while working on something that we love ... hiking trails ... and helping make them a place where both ourselves and others can enjoy.
As part of the Chattanooga Hiking Meetup's philosophy, we believe in doing our part to give back to the community. Our friends at Cloudland Canyon State Park could really use our help. Would you be willing to give of your time and effort to help preserve this park?
Let's show them that the Chattanooga Hiking Meetup is serious about giving back to the community, and let's show them what we can do. Will you come help us on this day?

Start time : 9am
End Time: approximately 3-4pm
if you can only stay half a day, that is fine, too...
all help will be appreciated
Meeting Location: main office / visitor center of Cloudland Canyon State Park
(to the right, just after you enter the park)
Although tools will be provided, if you have any of the following, we'd encourage you to bring them:
shears gloves shovels
loppers safety goggles/glasses mattocks
Help will not be turned away because you don't bring tools, though. The park could use all the help we could get.

What can you expect to be doing?
Hello fellow Adventurers and Trail Maintainers. Have not one but TWO exciting things to share about this event. #1- We are going to be doing the final construction phases ( dirt digging ) of a new trail which will become, in addition to an extension of our Overlook Trail an important new piece of the Great Eastern Trail. Read all about it here: http://www.greateasterntrail.net/ This Summer there will be people backpacking this new 1800 mile trail on a section you helped construct. #2 To say THANK YOU for your efforts you are hereby invited to join us for our 1st, quarterly BBQ Dinner w/ Entertainment event to say THANK YOU to our Friends, Volunteers, and Community!
The Friends of Cloudland Canyon State Park are having a “Friends” Welcome/Recruiting Dinner at the park day use area on Saturday, March 10th, The activities will begin at 4:00 pm Food serving will start at approximately 5pm. We will be serving pork, hamburgers and hotdogs with all the trimmings. We are planning on having local entertainment before, during and after the food serving. The meal and entertainment are free. Everyone is invited. Please come out and enjoy a nice meal with entertainment. BTW...when you come into the park that morning, be sure to tell the gate keeper you are there for Volunteer Trail Work and your admission is Free! Hope your plans will allow you to join us for this post work activity, in Your Honor!
Although there is normally a $5 parking fee at Cloudland Canyon, there will be NO PARKING FEES for those that come to the park to volunteer. Just mention at the front gate that you are there to volunteer, and they will let you go through free of charge. Please meet the group by the main office, just to the right as you enter the park.

Be sure to bring:
Water, snacks/lunch, and a smile

THANK YOU in advance for helping us be a part
of helping our community ! ! !
After one trail maintenance gig you will become very intimate with a mattock. :-)
This is awesome! So glad to see so many people eager to help give back to the community .. and back to the environment. We are the ones that love to hike, so it makes sense for us to be a part of maintaining them. Thanks for signing up to volunteer.
No Problemo, assume there will be others that can only come for part of the day. Suggest you stop at the office to get driving directions to where we will be parked. We will be working on a New Trail a short distance from there. You can phone me to get specific walking directions as to where we will be working when you arrive! :-) 423-702-1218
Rhonda Cantrell..Always looking fwd to meeting fellow outdoor enthusiast ! Looks like a day full of activity and fun times with friends (oh and food ;>) Yaay for Friends of Cloudland Canyon !!
I hope that the weather will be nice for this and I hope that nobody expects me to know how to build anything!
LOL Stephanie!! I'm hoping nobody thinks that I can build anything too!!
To put everyone's mind at ease, the complicated part is done. It will be a 'litl hard work and dirty, but no huge skills required. If you can hoe a garden or plant a bush, no problem. We are taking 3/8 mile of presently sloped trail and cutting it into a benched, flat path. We will teach everyone when we start how to do it and there will be several of us working with you the entire time. Lastly, don't forget our Thank You BBQ Dinner with a Band immediately following. :) FUN WILL BE HAD BY ALL!
I don't know about you, Greg, but I'm really excited about seeing so many people signing up for this Saturday's trail maintenance event. It's great to see people coming together, willing to give of their time and efforts, to make a difference. I'm sure that you'd agree with me when I say that I am very proud of CHM and it's members for being so initiative-taking. Hats off to each of you. I look forward to seeing each of you on Saturday. As a team, we can get a lot accomplished. Let's do it!
Greg - will we need to hike in to the work site any significant distance?
Good Question, Melissa. Actually, one of the reasons we chose this project for your group is that the new trail we are working on is just 3/8 of a mile long. There is parking at either end. Therefore, you will never be farther than 800 feet from your vehicle. Nice, Huh! :) See Ya Saturday and don't forget about our Thank You cookout to follow and the band playing is Rick Gattone's 'Virtual Unknown'. Gonna be a Fun Day!
And Rhonda...actually, You do know about Me. hee hee. I am Really, Really excited about seeing so many people willing to Give Something Back to Mother Earth so that our Grandchildren and their Grandchildren can have the exact same communing with nature expereience...as Us! Only WE can make a difference! Happy Trails! :-)
If any folks want to carpool from the Atlanta area (I see that we have a few), let me know.
I just checked the weather forecast at the weather channel ... says sunny, high of 65, and 0% chance of rain ... for saturday .. so if that holds true, we should be good ... rains from tonight are supposed to end early tomorrow morning.
Happy to announce that tomorrow is going to be a Beautiful Day. :) Also Excited to tell you that Marty Dominy with the Great Eastern Trail is going to be there in the morning to train us on the work we seek to accomplish, so please try to be on time! See You Tomorrow at 9:00 AM at the CCSP Main Office.
Greg
Greg, my father in law is sick and I may decide to travel to visit him tomorrow. If I do, should I call you or just change my RSVP?
One HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who came out to Give Something Back to our trail system at CCSP and Mother Earth! You helped build a New Trail that will provide a Commmuning with Nature Experience be enjoyed for Generations to Come! Namaste and Happy Trails! G
LOL.........you probably have one and just call it something different. A mattock is a versatile hand tool, used for digging and chopping, similar to the pickaxe. It has a long handle, and a stout head, which combines an axe blade and an adze (cutter mattock) or a pick and an adze (pick mattock). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mattock
