PINE MOUNTAIN TRAIL

Meeting Time: 9:30am
Hiking Distance: approximately 7.5 miles
Rating: moderate to difficult
(mostly due to uphill climbs)
Distance from Chattanooga: approximately 1hour
(this hike is in Cartersville, GA)
We will depart from the parking lot and take the first half of the West Loop Trailhead to embark on an uphill climb to the ridge of Pine Mountain, where we will then head to the David G. Archer Overlook at the summit (which is 1,562 feet above sea level) for a stunning view of Allatoona Lake, the Etowah River Valley, and surrounding areas.

We will take a brief break here, then continue on to the first half of the East Loop, where we will descend the mountain and follow the connector trail to Cooper's Furnace. Here, we will hike the Cooper's Furnace trail, which is an additional mile each way, and then break for lunch. We will then return via the connector trail to complete the second half of the West Loop to the top of Pine Mountain, and return to the parking lot via the second half of the East Loop.

Items to Bring:
Water
Snacks / Lunch
Hiking boots
Trekking poles (if you have them)
Directions: Take I-75 to Exit 288, go East (right if coming from Atlanta, or left if coming from Chattanooga) less than a quarter mile until the road ends, then make a right at the Komatsu sign. Parking area for the West Loop Trailhead is on the left before entering Komatsu.
No-Shows: As with all Meetup's, please be polite -- if you are a YES RSVP, please show up. If you can't make it, please change your YES to a NO as soon as possible. Please don't be a "no-show!"
As a group, we are fortunate that most of our members are very respectful in this way, and we thank you and appreciate you for that.
WEATHER: As with all outdoor events, if it's raining/stormy or very poor trail conditions, we may have to cancel. If the weather is questionable, please check this event page before you leave home.

so that you do not hold up the group.
We will be meeting at the trailhead parking lot at 9:30am est. Directions to the trailhead are indicated above, below the last picture. For those wanting to carpool from Chattanooga, please plan on meeting at the Bi-Lo in East Ridge (exit 1A on I-75) no later than 8:10. Please park closest to the road to allow customers the closer spots. Plan on bringing rain gear just in case. If you have trekking poles, bring them.
Just a heads up that Sunday is calling for a 90% chance of rain throughout the day, with thunderstorms included. It is not looking for the hike. I will check again later tonight to see if anything has changed. Please be sure to check your email and meetup page before driving out to the hike. Safety is important, and although I am not concerned with mere rain, if thunderstorms are in the forecast, the hike will likely be cancelled.
It will be too bad if we do this and can't see the awesome views past the clouds. I'll keep checking back. Maybe the weatherman will change his mind.
I have been checking the weather forecast on the weather channel, as I know that we have all been looking forward to the hike at Pine Mountain, but it is still showing for thunder showers all morning until noon. Had it been mere showers alone, the hike would go on. However, when thunder is involved (which usually brings lightening with it), as organizers we reconsider. As a result, for the safety of everyone, this hike will be rescheduled at a later date.
Are we to be at the trailhead at 9:30 or 10? Thanks!
