Fiery Gizzard Trailhead (Grundy Forest) (map)
Meeting Time: 11 AM Eastern
Meeting Place: Grundy Forest Trailhead
Hike Distance: 10 miles
Estimated Hike Time: 6 hours
Join your fellow hikers for a full day of exploring one of the most beautiful trails in Tennessee! Trip leader Barry will be heading down with Nashville Hiking Meetup members and will meet you at the trailhead.
Directions to the Grundy Forest Trailhead:
Take Exit 134 off I-24
Turn right through Monteagle
Turn left onto Hwy 41 (not the first Hwy 41 on your left, take the second)
Pass the park's Visitor Station on your left
About a mile or two farther you'll see a sign for the trailhead entrance on your right; it's just before Electric Office Building
The road winds to the right past a school.
Bring plenty of water, lunch, your camera, and a backpack to carry it all in! Be sure to wear trail-ready shoes such as hiking boots; I do not recommend regular tennis shoes.
See trail map: http://www.friendsofs...
We will start at the north parking lot of Grundy Forest Natural Area and hike to Raven Point via Dog Hole Trail and return the same way. No rock hopping on this route!
Fiery Gizzard is part of the South Cumberland State Recreational Area: http://www.friendsofs...
"Trail features cascading streams, numerous waterfalls, panoramic overlooks, extremely rocky gorges, gentle slopes and lush woodlands. This trail is one of the most diverse and beautiful in the state and has been ranked as one of the top twenty-five backpacking trails in the U. S. by Backpacker magazine. There are four primitive campgrounds along the trail."
Dinner afterward at, where else, Crust Pizza in Sewanee.
It was a beautiful day for a hike. Once the leafs start to change, we will set another hike up in this area.
