Prentice Cooper Cook-out and Night Hike

No location was chosen

Meet at Davis Pond parking area in Prentice Cooper State Forest at 6:45pm. Grill hamburgers, hot-dogs, or whatever prior to 4 mile Pot Point Road hike which will begin about 8:15pm. Pot Point Road is a jeep trail thru the woods, not a paved road. We should complete the 4 mile loop in 1.5 to 2 hours. Hike begins before dark but ends after dark so bring a good light. Bring your own food, water, cooking equipment, garbage bags, lawn chairs, etc.

Directions from downtown Chattanooga:
Take US 27 North thru downtown Chattanooga. As you are leaving downtown area on US 27, you will cross Tennessee River. After crossing river, begin a long uphill grade. After topping hill, begin a long downhill grade. As you approach bottom of downhill grade you will see a sign that says “Signal Mtn 127 North” which marks the exit to Highway 127. Exit here onto Highway 127 which is also known as Signal Mountain Blvd. The exit ramp sends you in the correct direction on 127.

Continue on Highway 127 (Signal Mountain Blvd) for about 1.75 miles to your next turn onto State Highway 27 also known as Suck Creek Road and shown on Google maps as Cherokee Trail. Along the way to the left hand turn onto State Highway 27 you will pass the Komatsu heavy equipment plant on your right and then a traffic light at Mountain Creek Road intersection. After passing thru Mountain Creek Road intersection, you should move into left hand lane in preparation for left turn about .4 mile past Mountain Creek Road intersection. A few hundred yards before your left turn onto State Highway 27, you will see a quick oil change business on your right.

After turning left onto State Highway 27, you will immediately cross railroad tracks. Continue on State Highway 27 for about 8 miles to a left turn onto Choctow Trail at brown colored Prentice Cooper sign. Along the way to Prentice Cooper sign, you will pass Buzzi Unicem plant shortly after crossing railroad tracks and Suck Creek Baptist Church at about 3.5 miles. At about 4 miles you will begin an approximate 4 mile curvy uphill grade to the left turn at Prentice Cooper sign.

After turning onto Choctow Trail, take the first left which is only a few hundred yards. You will see a couple of small brown colored signs directing the way to this left turn.

A few hundred yards after the left turn, pavement turns to gravel and shortly thereafter you will enter Prentice Cooper State Forest and Wildlife Management Area. After entering Prentice Cooper, continue on the gravel road for about 6.5 miles to a left turn on Davis Pond Road, a dirt road which is marked.

Continue on Davis Pond Road for about .5 mile to a fork in road. Bear to left at fork and continue on for about .2 mile to Davis Pond parking area on left.

I thought it was a great first hike! Gave me an opportunity to meet some hikers in the area and connect with some people who may be interested in future hikes. As for the trail, it was a jeep trail which was wide so we hiked a lot in big bundles all talking to each other. It seemed everyone enjoyed it and we all had a great time!

What a great group of people! The whole thing was well organized with wonderful easy to follow directions. Everyone shared their grills and food and chairs. The hike started on time and ended on time. I hope to attend many more of these meetups. I met some very nice people.
